Soundtrack Black

Knoxville, TN

Soundtrack Black is the next chapter in a musical partnership that began in 1987. After several other projects, Steve Britton and Joel Stooksbury officially founded Knoxville alternative rock band Immortal Chorus in 1990. Through an evolving lineup of musicians, several independent releases, and regional and national performances, Immortal Chorus carved out its place in the underground music scene. Following the band's first hiatus in 1995, Britton and Stooksbury reunited as a duo in 1997 to record Noble Cause. Guitarist Kevin Miller later returned, contributing to the writing and recording of Premonition. The album received an enthusiastic response, but after another run of live performances, Immortal Chorus once again stepped away. Rather than abandon their musical partnership, Britton and Stooksbury began exploring a new creative direction under the name Soundtrack Black. Working from Stooksbury's home studio, which adopted the same name in tribute to the project, the duo wrote and recorded their debut album, First Born, released in 2009. First Born found an audience among longtime Immortal Chorus followers and new listeners alike. Independent radio embraced the release, with several tracks charting prominently in the underground scene. Former Immortal Chorus guitarist Brian Jolley returned for select live performances, though Soundtrack Black remained primarily a studio-driven collaboration rather than returning to the extensive touring of its predecessor. More than three decades after their musical journey began, Britton and Stooksbury continue to create together. With First Born finding a new home on Demo Jail and new Soundtrack Black material in development, the story is far from finished.
